Law Society for England & Wales

Representative body for solicitors in England and Wales.

HM Land Registry

Public body which registers all freehold and leasehold properties in England and Wales.  A useful on-line calculator also allows accurate calculation of Land Registry fees applying to any property transaction.

HM Revenue and Customs

Formed from a merger of Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise dealing with the collection and administration of taxes in the UK.

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT)

Tax payable on purchases of land and property in the UK.  The site also contains useful on-line calculators allowing accurate calculation of SDLT payable on property purchases, lease transactions and share purchases.

Companies House

The official Government register of UK companies.  Search for any UK registered limited company or limited liability partnership.  Also search for previous names and dissolved companies.

The Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB)

Organisation established to compensate victims of negligent uninsured and untraceable motorists.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)

Promotes safety in all areas of life, including the home, at work, in schools, and on the road. 

Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

Protecting people against the risk of injury at work.

Age UK

The new name for the combined charities Age Concern and Help the Aged.

Office of the Public Guardian

Government body protecting the interests of those who lack capacity to handle their own affairs.  Contact them for information on registering Enduring Powers of Attorney, creating and registering Lasting Powers of Attorney, and Deputyships.

Court of Protection

The court that makes decisions for those who lack capacity in relation to property, healthcare and personal welfare.

Council of Mortgage Lenders

Trade association for the residential lending industry in the UK.

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)

Leading organisation for the regulation and training of professionals involved in land, property and construction.

Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)

Organisation for the regulation and training of Chartered Accountants.

Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS)

Organisation dedicated to preventing and resolving employment disputes.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)

"Super-department" merging Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) (itself formerly the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)).

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)

Government department responsible for welfare and employment issues.

Financial Services Authority (FSA)

Regulator of UK financial services providers.
